The San Diego Chargers American football team have been members of the West Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the NFL since 1970. Since the AFL/NFL merger in 1970, the Chargers have been to the playoffs thirteen times and the AFC Championship game four times. They appeared in Super Bowl XXIX in 1994 and lost to the San Francisco 49ers 49-26. With no NFL team in Los Angeles, the Chargers remain the only NFL franchise in Southern California.
